In January 1946 Leo Durocher is fired as the Dodgers manager, and GM Branch Rickey resigns. KG Erwin takes over both roles in a changing MLB world. With the Dodgers signing Jackie Robinson, other teams have taken on black players in their minor league systems. Also, many major league stars who served in WWII are returning to their teams, so spring training will begin two weeks earlier than usual. The Dodgers have not appeared in the World Series since 1941, which they lost to the Yankees.
Giants' owner Horace Stoneham signs Leo Durocher.
KG has determined to shake up the roster, so we make the following moves:
1. We trade 43-yr-old P Curt Davis* to the Yankees for 30-yr-old P Bill Bevens.
2. We send 36-yr-old RF Dixie Walker to the Senators for 30-yr-old RF Buddy Lewis.
3. We send 31-yr-old P Kirby Higbe to the Seantors for 40-yr-old 1B Joe Kuhel.
4. We send 35-yr-old OF Joe Medwick to the Giants for 29-yr-old OF Johnny Rucker.
We release 3B Lew Riggs, OF Earl Naylor and P Jean-Pierre Roy.
We sign amateur FA P Mario Picone and assign him to A.
In the pre-season power rankings the top two teams are the Yankees and the Cardinals. My Dodgers are rated 12th overall.

We have Monday off.
The hot teams in the two leagues, to everyone's surprise, are the AL Senators (13-6) and the NL Phillies (14-6).
Team notes: in AAA, IF Jackie Robinson is serving notice with his hitting (.406/4/17, with a OPS of 1.104). He will be difficult to keep out of the majors, and could be called up soon. He is playing at 2B, but we need help at 1B. We will be following his progress closely, as well as SP Don Newcombe (2-0, 3.89 in AAA). I don't want to cross the color barrier into the majors too soon, as I want these players to be fully ready. They are both developing quickly, but I want them to be impact players. I hope I can wait till 1947 to introduce both of them.

I issue a public statement: "I am making this announcement to state that I am not a social crusader. I am the general manager and onfield manager of a professional baseball team, and I have two goals to accomplish. The first is to hire and draft men of outstanding moral character, in order to provide good examples to our fans and to reflect the image of our proud borough of Brooklyn. The second is to put together a winning baseball team. Race, creed or color does not matter, as these do not play a part in how a man conducts himself on the field or in public. Thank you."
With this preamble I begin the integration of the 1946 Dodgers. I also ask public relations secretary Harold Parrott to come up with a new slogan for the Dodgers, to replace the "Brooklyn Bums" with something that will identify us as a team that represents all of America. He simply says, "How about 'America's Team' ?" "That's it" I reply.
