My take on the seemingly increased injuries like the hamstrings in football players, IMO, is the fact they did all the weight lifting and conditioning to get bigger and stronger, but they neglected to evenly match a running regimen to go along with the extra weight their body was carrying making a lot of these guys to be, maybe too fit. They can make their legs bigger and stronger, but they still neglected the training portion of running with the extra strength. That's my 2 cents worth.

Another reason why I use the 5 man rotation: (especially we have 30 teams instead of 16) what if, you don't have any superstars pitchers ... most of them can go 5-6 innings or less ... while managing day to day operation of trying to win games, you have to analyze your pitchers, who have the best chance of winning ... I don't have the luxury of having any pitchers who can go 8 to 9 innings, but starters who should be middle relievers ... for the team that I have, I wish I can go to 6 man rotation ... in giving my first three pitchers to become 100% ready to pitch ... Today, there are many strategies and ways to beat your opponents, who have more superior players but one must have to grind it out to put out the best lesser players that one have, on any given day, to try to win the game ... It's tough but, mates, It's Baseball ... LOVE IT!!!

Look, even though I use a 4-man rotation in 1946, I have to keep a couple of spot-starters in my bullpen for the doubleheaders which were common back then. Most teams only carry 9 pitchers, but I choose to carry 10. I honestly believe that all teams should be required to carry 10, at least from the year 1946 onward.

Jabez, you're comment could be the real reason behind 5-man Rotations. I have read a few of Ted Williams' books and he states several times in multiple books that he was abhorrent to The Expansion. "Damned Expansion diluted the entire League's pitching. Teams brought up those shitty Minor League pitchers that don't belong. If it weren't for new teams, those guys would still be fighting to break into the bullpen!" Pardon my French but Teddy Ballgame was the King of Curse Words Maybe teams needed the 5-Man because of bad pitching.

I see my post struck tender parts. Baseball is intricately a part of American life. To say that nothing in baseball has any connection to anything else happening in American life is preposterous. It is perfectly legitimate to point out that the general softness of Americans, the large majority of whom live lives of luxury, safety and ease our parents and grandparents could only dream about, is related to certain changes in baseball over the same period; each reflects the other. If this post had been around in 1947 that would be like saying that banning black players from the major leagues had nothing to do with racism in American society in general. But I will make no more disturbing comments. I would like somebody to show me that there were more injuries to pitchers during the 4-man era and more career ending injuries. And anyway, shouldn't players making gigantic sums of money be willing to accept risk? Shouldn't, indeed, the risk be in some proportion to the amount of money?
Thanks

Ajantaka usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2007-06-11-four-man-rotation_N.htmAn old article. Most of the info you're looking for is at the bottom of the page. Seems they can't really find enough evidence about past Injuries. Here's an excerpt from an article, metsmerizedonline.com/2013/01/the-5-%C2%BD-man-rotation-a-healthier-and-winning-formula-for-future-mets-teams.html/ about the 2013 Mets using a 5 1/2 Man Rotation lol! -In the minors, the Mets have already been going with a 5 or 6 days of rest routine for most of their farm teams over the past two seasons. And the result has been an unusually low amount of arm injuries to the young pitching prospects – a refreshing change from the past. Again, the sample size is just as small here. But if 25 out of the 25 or so regular minor league SP manage to stay reasonably healthy getting 5+ days of rest between starts instead of 4, maybe it´ll also help keep arms healthier (and more effective) at the major league level. So, this is already a widely used approach at the minor league level – and really the reason it got me thinking. As for your thoughts about America and Baseball, I definitely agree. Just look at the Melting Pot that is Major League Baseball now! Even though it's definitely NOT America's sport anymore. Football beats every sport in every category, Media (just about every game can be seen on T.V. while I'm lucky to watch a game other than Baltimore/Washington/Atlanta), Number of Viewers, Merchandise (Pretty sure that's true anyway), Amount of Tickets Sold/Attendance per Game (Still only pretty sure about that one too lol) Lastly, as someone that has gotten attention (albeit very little) from MLB scouts and been through the (painstaking) process of attempting to get noticed through Open Tryouts I'll say that every Organization takes a completely business like approach to fielding their MLB team. Prospects who are lucky enough to get drafted within certain Rounds (1-5 or something) are awarded major Signing Bonuses (nothing new here). The other draftees are treated as jersey fillers. The high draft picks get more opportunities in terms of Playing Time (regardless of whether or not a different player of the same position is playing significantly better than said prospect) getting help from coaches, better treatment (injury prevention and otherwise), and will advance through the Org. at a faster rate. This is because the Org. has invested more in this Prospect (again, obvious). Now if Prospect X makes it to the Show at a reasonable age (25-27) the investment is a success. Now let's say Prospect X signs a nice Contract after the Rookie Contract. If he was to get injured, Prospect X is now being paid for nothing. It's a matter of getting what you paid for. Organization (I keep using Org. instead of team so you'll really get the idea that it's more of a "Company" than a "Team" ) pays Prospect X to put up numbers and win games over the course of the contract. If Prospect X is expected to put up BLANK numbers for BLANK years, then it's more logical in a business sense to limit the risks involved. Baseball is a game of Consistency. Players are paid based on how good they are on a day-to-day basis. So basically, if I'm going to pay Clayton Kershaw $100 Million for 5 years or however long he signed. I'm paying him to Win just about every start, or more specifically keep the Opponent from scoring more than 2-3 Runs, for 5 years. If that means giving him more days of rest/giving him a pitch count limit then so be it. The worst thing that could happen is for Kershaw to miss significant time during those 5 years. I would be paying him $100 Million to sit on the bench. It's all about Money and the Future when managing Pro Sports Franchises. P.S. Last part is just describing the thought process of MLB in response to your comment about Risks and Payment. Not to debate the Injuries with 4-Man/5-Man
