The West Coast Baseball Association is a small baseball league founded in 1974. It consists of two leagues with each league containing two five team divisions. What makes this league unique is the each division is made up of five teams from one state. The four states that make up the WCBA are Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. Early on the owners decided that they would not adopt the DH rule in either the Lewis or the Clark Leagues. Will the Association has found moderate success in the states it represents, there are currently no plans to expand (but this could change depending on my mood after any given season).
Today is March 31, 1990 and I have been asked to take on the GM/Managing the Waipahu Warriors. Waipahu is a small town on the island of O'ahu with a population of approximately 38,500. During the existence of the Association the ball club has won 2 Titles (1979, 1980). The team has an overall record of 1,334 - 1,258 since its inception, Unfortunately, since 1985 when the team won 100 games, the team's record has trended downwards where last season they finished 74-88 an astonishing 26 GB in fifth place. To make it worse we were nine games behind the fourth place team and each team above us all had records better than .500.
I intend to rebuild the team through the draft while sprinkling in a free agent or two in as needed in order to make the team competitive again. In reviewing my expiring contracts following our season, I noticed that we only have four. I am not sure if this good or not, but currently each of the possible free agents are all in AAA.
The preseason expectations have us as the thirteenth ranked team. I hope to beat that, but at least we aren't last. Unfortunately this still has us finishing last in our tough division. The top two teams in our division are currently ranked second and third (Hilo and Honolulu).
I plan on updating after each series, with a brief recap of how the series went. I will also try and use this as away to introduce the team to you as we go. After each month I might write a league recap posting the league standings (if I can figure out how to do it).
Writers notes: First off, I want to thank Mr. Frozen Stiffer for the assistance in creating this fictional league. His assistance was greatly appreciated. I am hoping that by sharing how things are going a couple of things will happen:
1 - Will continue with this association. It is one of my biggest weaknesses. I want to play, but I do get frustrated easily.
2 - I do plan keeping the updates short as I don't want it to become a chore. I want this to be fun for me and anyone who wants to read.
3 - Feel free to add advice or encouragement as it will help become better
So now on to the games.
As for the team we start the season with a three game home stand against the Kailua Whales who are currently ranked number 8.
