I'm returning to the 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers once again, to restart my Golden Age franchise. I'm using 60-man rosters, early draft entry, age-based fatigue ratings and tru-life performance ratings. The Dodgers haven't won a pennant since 1941, but now, with most WWII veterans returning, hope to recapture some of their pre-war geatness. The Dodgers fire manager Leo Durocher, who is then hired by the Giants. Joe McCarthy resigns as Yankees' manager, and is replaced by Bucky Harris.
Spring training will begin a few weeks earlier than usual, what with all of the returning veterans, so there are an excess number of players competing for jobs in the majors. Also, there are a few black players in the minors, a few on the Dodgers and a few on other teams. Brooklyn was first, signing Jackie Robinson in 1945. These are the first black players on team rosters in the 20th Century. Also in my minors are pitchers Don Newcombe and Dan Bankhead, and C Roy Campanella.
We release the following: P Elmer Sexauer, P John Hall, C Mike Sandlock, 3B Lew Riggs, 1B Chuck Connors, CF Earl Naylor and LF Joe Tepsic.
We sign amateur FA P Mario Picone.
We trade 36 yr old RF Dixie Walker to the Red Sox for 33 yr old 1B Rudy York.
We send 35 yr old OF Joe Medwick to the Senators for 31 yr old SS Gil Torres.
We send 43 yr old P Curt Davis to the Yankees for 30 yr old P Bill Bevens.
In the pre-season rankings, the Yankees and the Cardinals are the writers' favorites. The Dodgers are ranked 12th overall.
