After a 90-64 season in 1946, in which we fell short of our pennant-winning goal by a mere 4 games, we look ahead to a new season. We had no retirements during the offseason, so we advance to the 1947 amateur draft.
Here are our picks:
1. 19 yr old P Erv Palica
2. 23 yr old 1B Dee Fondy
3. 23 yr old P George Zuverink
4. 21 yr old P Lou Sleater*
5. 22 yr old LF Jack Maguire
6. 22 yr old CF Bob Addis
We release the following players: P Ray Prim, LF Ed Sanicki, LFJesse Levan, LF Marv Rackley and 1B Chuck Connors. We now carry 55 players. Erv Palica makes it to the major league pitching staff.
The pre-season power rankings favor the Yankees and the Cardinals. The 1946 WS Champion Red Sox are placed 5th, and the Dodgers rank 14th.
Our lineup is:
2B Jackie Robinson
LF Pete Reiser
CF Carl Furillo
SS Bobby Sturgeon
3B Spider Jorgensen
C Roy Campanella
1B Ed Stevens
RF Gene Hermanski
The starting rotation is:
Hal Newhouser*
Bill Bevens
Don Newcombe
Ralph Branca/Hal Gregg

The Braves seem much more confident than last year. They are definitely a better team.
Trade rumors: we've been in talks with an AL team for a possible trade involving one of our star players. We shall see if a good package can be put together, but it may take some time before a deal is finalized.
Roster news: we release IF Irv Hall and call up OF Cal Abrams. Abrams will be used as a late-inning defensive specialist in LF & RF. We also sign 24 yr old FA RF Joe Smaza. We assign him to A and promote RF Tom Wright to AA. We also sign 32 yr old 2B Blas Monaco and assign him to A. 2Bs Danny Lynch and Owen Friend each get promoted one level. Of course, in the minors my prize pupil is OF Duke Snider, who is progressing but is still a couple of years away from being ready for the majors. I see him being our starting CF in 1949 or 1950.

WP: Cooper (1-0) LP: Newcombe (0-1) SV: Hansen (1) POG: Johnny Hopp (4 of 5 with a HR, a SB, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored) Att: 21,468
Roster news: we send C Roy Campanella down to AAA and call up 1B Dee Fondy.
Trade news: we send LH 1B Ed Stevens to the Indians for RH 1B Howie Schultz. Schultz and Fondy will platoon at 1B. We then pull off another deal with the Indians, the one we've been negotiating for awhile. This one will immediately make the Indians contenders in the AL. In exchange for P Hal Newhouser* and P George Zuverink, we get two top-notch prospects: 3B Al "Flip" Rosen and P Clyde King. King will join our bullpen, while Rosen will be assigned to AA. This is a controversial deal, but it fulfills a present and a future need. Hal Gregg will become our 4th starter, while Rosen will be our future 3B, a role he can eventually fill for many years to come.
