I thought I would ask a couple questions:
First, for those who manage out their games I am wondering who uses pick off as a standard play call? I use it as a way to hold the runner on the base or close to the base as it appears to me as the only way to do so. Otherwise I am not sure how to hold runners as they seem to steal bases against me otherwise. Any thoughts? I know that currently I only have a small sample size, but I thought I would ask.
Second, so far there seems to be a lot of speed players generated in my league. Once again it is a small sample size, but I thought I would ask what others are seeing. Of course, my team has speed but apparently they can't steal a base to save my life.
Lastly, how do you build your team. My current fictional team is built like the Mariners apparently. Decent to great defense, no hit with great pitching to help.
Thank,
Taz

Good Questions ....
First off, really depends on my catcher's arm ratings ... the higher the rating over the player's speed - better off my chances of using the standard call - again, it depends on the pitcher's timely release ... otherwise, I got to do the best with what I have ... it's usually 50-50 , I'm afraid ...
Not sure in what Era, you're in ... but over 85% of players has greater speed than 50 in my 1875-1890 Era ... I imagined it would be normal, due to the Coliseum size ballparks back then ... I usually have guys with greater speed and OBP in the top two, as well as, in the #7 & 8 slots ... hopefully, have some decent hitters that can drive in a few runs ... otherwise, I better have some strong pitchers to my team in the game ...
I try to emulate Weaver's Orioles in the 70's ... what I like to call, the Line of Success ... great catcher, strong SS & 2nd, to finish with the splendid Center Fielder ... of course, good solid pitching like the Orioles of the 70's or the Braves of the 90's ... with that combo ... I'm at least, guaranteed a winning record ... (but then again, maybe not ... )

With a fast guy on 1B, I often use pitch out to try and catch him stealing if he tries. Seems to work better than pick off. I use real players and have already done Rangers 2010 and am currently doing Rangers 2012 with tru life transactions, so I have no choice of who I have on my team. When I do get around to managing games as well as GM, I like to have power and really good arms in all three OF positions. I also strive to build strong pitching and a C with a great arm and take the best I can get everywhere else. But when I try it, I also have house rules to stick too such as trying to build mostly through the draft and FAs are limited to two per season unless I have been gutted from those leaving. The two FAs are any combo, 2 Ps, 2 fielders or one of each. Trades are only with those sending offers and I can get a good deal or shopping those that won't re-sign with my team and take what I can get or let them go FA after making them awit the rest of the season before releasing them or at least most of it.

I use the pick off with some frequency. Seems to hold the runners...helps get more double plays.
