1954 season, historical replay, tru-life transactions and real lineups. Did an unattended autoplay choosing the option to set to the last day and go. Got to that day and the only way to get the game to do anything was to Quick Sim each game, including the world series games. At that point, none of the buttons at the bottom of the screen worked (they had not worked once I got to the last day of the season) and the only way to exit the game was through the Task Manager. Upon re-opening the game I was presented with the option to start the off-season and was able to do anything I wanted as everything was now functional.

I had never played the Historical Replay - ever ... In other words, how does this work ? ... keep replaying the same season over and over again - with different results? ... for I have always been more interested in the Career mode ...

No, you just start in a given year and proceed from there. For me, I always start in 1954 as I was born in Baltimore and that was the 1st year of the franchise there. The team used to be the St Louis Browns but they moved to Baltimore in '54. I am probably more familiar with all the players on the team starting in '57.
One progresses from year to year though I have never gotten real far due to many of the bugs and historical anomalies that have been part of the nature of the game through all previous versions. Even with actual starting lineups this mostly is pitcher usage, particularly the use of relief pitchers. I would prefer to NOT use historical lineups but then the usage of starting pitchers gets too out of whack as well. For example, in that '54 season I ran with actual starting lineups, Bob Turley started 35 games for the Orioles just as he did in real life (to be expected with actual starting lineups). However, IRL that is all the games he pitched in while in my replay he pitched in 60 games total, the difference being relief appearances. Maybe there is a way to control that through the player usage screen but I don;t think you can do that fro computer controlled teams and, anyway, it would be a monumental task researching and doing that for every player in the league.
I like using the historical aspect with strict seasonal stats to see if I can make a difference compared to the historical results by my managing the team in regard to the makeup of the roster, lineup decisions and game strategies.
