Now that I have PS 6, I decided to restart the 2001 Pirates with 60-man rosters and early draft entry. I'm writing the dynasty report at Wolverine, and looking at how the AI GMs will handle finances. The Yankees and Mets have the biggest markets (200) while the Pirates are rated at 45. I began the season with a $83 million payroll, which I've whittled down to $59 million. I traded away my two most expensive players (Brian Giles and Jason Schmidt), while signing amateur FA P Jeremy Guthrie, R.A. Dickey and Joaquin Benoit. My team is better than the PS 5 version, but the make-up is different. I wasn't able to trade for Josh Beckett and Carlos Zambrano this time, but for my major league roster I did get Wade Miller and veteran Bret Saberhagen.
Out of 60 players, half of them have 1 year contracts, so it will keep me busy in trying to decide who to sign for extensions. The "greed factor" is the great unknown when negotiating with players (and their unseen agents). I find this one of the most interesting things about finances. Since I'm a tax auditor, I'm used to crunching numbers, so it's fascinating.
I just played out my first game, and the Pirates beat the Reds in Cincinnati 5-1.
