I realize that there has been a lot of work done on historical pitching statistics, but I feel that it seems to be creeping into the Modern ERA of pitch counts, full use of bullpens, etc. I have run another sim of 10 years to see if what the pitching stats would look like using the following:
Fictional 16 team league
Sim started in 2013
No DH in either league
5 man rotations (strict)
Managers are set up to a very quick hook
(not sure what else you might want to know)
For each simmed year, I have pitchers with complete games of 17, 15, 14, 13 - with on average of 35 starts each season. Also, the number of innings pitched each year also tends to be above 265. Now obviously this is not for all pitchers, but usually for the top 2 or 3 of each rotation.
I was reviewing the historical data and while there might an outlier each year, the league leaders tend to have between 4-6 complete games each year, with most pitchers fortunate to have 1 or 2 each year. Also, innings pitch for the league leaders about 230-250 each season. I was looking at years 2005 - 2012 for comparison.
I am not sure what I am missing or what I can do to make the pitchers seasons stats to be more in line with current modern baseball statistics. I do enjoy managing out games, but it gets frustrating when I feel that the team I playing seems to leave their starter in the game longer than they should just so they reach their upper pitch limit (my interpretation).
Any thoughts to assist in either correcting this or getting past this issue in my mind while playing? Since this is a fictional league, I can usually get past most other anomalies, but for some reason I am struggling to get past this one.
I appreciate the thoughts and help.
