On July 3, 2001, the Pirates sent 1B Mike Sweeney, SP prospect Cliff Lee* and 1B prospect Alex Hernandez to the Phillies in exchange for 1B prospect Ryan Howard, SP prospect Brian Duckworth and OF prospect Reggie Taylor. Acquiring power-hitting Howard was our primary concern, but getting rid of Sweeney's $6.3 million contract was another. 28 year old Sweeney will help the Phillies in their push for the NL East title, as he is hitting .298/13/42. We had acquired him from the Royals earlier this year. 22 year old Howard, who is signed for 3 years @ $267,000, is hitting .288/10/42 in AA. We offered him extensions for 4 and 5 years, but he declined.
The rebuilding Bucs now have the lowest payroll in the majors @ $49.7 million. We have $46.1 million left in the bank to apply towards acquiring new talent in 2002.

Very nice! If Ryan Howard approaches his real life potential, he's going to really help you along. It's a shame losing Lee though.
